When you feel like feeding your inner carnivore, there’s nothing quite like a butter-basted pan-seared steak. Paired with an easy to make Gorgonzola sauce, it can also be a perfect dish for Steak and BJ day.
For Valentine’s day we posted our Beetroot Valentine’s day cake. While I’m sure the guys could have appreciated the cake, the cute heart-shaped decorations, were probably not quite their thing. Which perfectly illustrates the problem with Valentine’s day as a whole. It should be about celebrating romantic love. In practice however, it’s the day when men show their love for their female partner, by buying stuff that women find romantic. Because, let’s be honest, Valentine’s day is for the girls.
So it’s only fair that there’s a special day for men too. Conveniently, such a day already exists: Steak and BJ day, for women who want to do something special for their man. Steak and BJ day probably started as an internet joke, so who “invented” it exactly is kind of unclear. There are people who really dislike this holiday and think it’s distasteful. I can’t say I understand them. If Valentine’s day has a right to exist, so does this holiday. Besides, it only started as a joke. So my advise would be to not take everything so seriously.
In any case, Steak and BJ day is a simple holiday. No cards, no flowers, just a steak and a BJ, not necessarily in that order. We will only be providing directions for the first part of this celebration. Sorry to anyone who was expecting a video-tutorial for the second part…
Our recipe for steak with Gorgonzola sauce is both delicious and simple to make. Cooking the steak is the only part that requires any real skill. Some people don’t like cooking steak because they’re scared of not cooking it “right”. Firstly, you’re not the head-chef at a restaurant, so there is no need for your food to be “perfect”. If it tastes right, you cooked it right. Secondly, don’t be afraid to try again. There’s no shame in not getting things quite right on the very first try. And thirdly, he’ll forgive you as long as the second part of the evening is to his liking.

- Remove the steak from the refrigerator so it can come up to room temperature.
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks. Boil them until they're soft.
- Meanwhile, cut the onions into thin slices and grate the garlic. Cook them in the vegetable oil until they soften.
- Pre-heat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Put the potatoes and onions together in an oven dish. Season with dried chilli flakes and ground black pepper. Put in the oven for 30 minutes.
- Season the steak liberally, on both sides, with salt and pepper. Then preheat the pan.
- When the pan is hot add a good amount of butter to the pan. Once that has mostly melted add your steak. Wait until it starts to caramelize before flipping it over. Cook it for about 6 minutes.
- Don't poke the steak with a fork or press down on it with a spatula, otherwise the juices in the steak will leach out. You can, however, spoon the hot butter over the steak to keep it moist.
- Place the steak on a plate and cover it with aluminium foil. Let it rest for about 10 minutes.
- In a saucepan, bring the cooking cream to a boil. Meanwhile cut the Gorgonzola into small pieces.
- Once the cream is hot, reduce the heat and add the Gorgonzola. Season with pepper and nutmeg and stir until all the cheese has melted. Serve straight away.
