Easy Homemade Applesauce

Easy Homemade Applesauce

Why buy a jar of sugary applesauce, when you can easily make your own? This applesauce is delicious and simple to make. Because it has no added sugar, it’s actually healthy as well.

The easiest way to make a sweet applesauce, without adding extra sugar, is by using sweet apples. (Hardly surprising, I know.) The sweetest varieties, tend to be the ones intended for eating out of hand. There are plenty of varieties to choose from, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Of course you can also use cooking apples or unripe windfall apples. But because they’re a lot tarter so you may need to add some sugar. You’ll probably have to cook them for longer as well. Cooking apples are a lot tougher than eating apples.

When I make applesauce, I often use older apples that are a bit mealy. In mealy apples, the glue that holds its cells together, has started to break down. This causes the apple to loose its moisture. They are not nice to eat anymore but still useable for applesauce.

When you make applesauce, you cook the apples down. Cooking causes the cells themselves to break open, releasing the liquid inside. This way you would never able to tell, that the apples you used were actually a bit past their best.

We usually eat our applesauce warm, with boiled potatoes and sausage. You can also serve it cold though. It’s tasty either way. Personally, I think this applesauce is sweet enough without extra sugar. If you have a sweeter tooth than me however, feel free to add some sugar anyway.

  6. To make the sauce, I usually break up the pieces with a potato masher. If you prefer your applesauce to be completely smooth, use a (hand)blender or food processor.
  7. Serve the applesauce warm or leave it to cool. You can keep the applesauce in the fridge, covered, for a day or two.
